Multi-disciplinary Research AreaBioinformatics[Overview] [Faculty] [Projects] [Courses] Bioinformatics is an interdisciplinary approach to studying the life sciences that applies techniques from math, statistics, and computation. In many areas of the life sciences, huge volumes of data are being accumulated by laboratory scientists, and a great opportunity exists to expand our knowledge through computational ways of extracting new information from this data. Application areas range from analysis and comparison of genome structures and gene expression patterns to phylogenetics to protein structure prediction. In computer science, we study algorithms that can be used solve these problems faster and/or more accurately. Relevant techniques include string matching, graph algorithms, statistical pattern recognition, and numerical/matrix algorithms.FacultyNancy Amato (applications of robotic motion planning to protein folding and ligand docking)Sing-Hoi Sze (combinatorial approaches to gene finding and signal finding in DNA sequences) Thomas Ioerger (applications of pattern recognition to protein structure analysis and X-ray crystallography) ProjectsAmato - http://parasol.tamu.edu/groups/amatogroup/research/computationalBio.phpSze - http://faculty.cs.tamu.edu/shsze Ioerger - TEXTAL
